Following the discussion with the residents from the Prairie Oaks Subdivision in early August, the traffic calming plan was revised and is attached for your review. Based on feedback received at the annual meeting last month, we have developed two options for the subdivision related to the traffic calming request. The two options are detailed below for discussion and potentially for the residents to vote on the desire path forward. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the two options detailed below. If the options will be presented to the residents for voting purposes, please keep us informed on the outcome of the vote to determine next steps.
Option 1 – Updated Traffic Calming Plan (attached)
Instead of the flexible centerline delineators throughout the subdivision, a physical object is being proposed on the side of the roadway to promote lower speeds within the subdivision. For this temporary condition, we’ll be able to complete a before/after speed study to determine if the traffic calming measure results in a speed reduction. At that point, more “A” object treatments from the attached layout can be implemented within the subdivision if desired.
The physical object (i.e., planter boxes) will require motorists to slow down and go around the object. The placement of objects on the roadway will still allow RVs, trucks, and buses to travel throughout the subdivision as they do today.
Playground signs to be installed on either end of the playground on Overland Trail between Prairie Oak Lane and Sante Fe Trail.
New pavement markings at existing stop signs within the subdivision
Option 2 – Police Enforcement at select times
HOA to contact the local police department and ask for police to use radar at select times of the day when higher speeds within the subdivision has been observed to be an issue.

The initial traffic calming plan would be implemented under a trial installation to determine the effectiveness of the devices. The trial installation will allow the parish an opportunity to monitor the traffic calming plan and allow for minor adjustments if needed. The trial installation will resemble the permanent measure as much as possible so if the plan is successful, the plan can become permanent and produce similar results for the neighborhood. If agreed upon, the traffic calming plan would be implemented and would be monitored for 3-6 months. The parish will conduct speed studies before the traffic calming plan is implemented and will conduct speed studies during the trial installation period. We’d definitely welcome any feedback from residents during the trial installation period as well. After the trial installation period, a decision can be made based on the data and feedback on whether to make the traffic calming plan permanent, make additional adjustments, or remove the plan all together.
Yes, the planter box/delineators will have reflective material to allow motorists to see the objects at night.
